The Real Reasons Why They Do Not Support Your Books!
The Real Reasons Why They Do Not Support Your Books!
I received this Email from a very good friend (Indian)…
Dear Majid – Thank you for your websites at www.alsuleimany.com and www.majidbooks.com – also at www.majidalsuleimany.wordpress.com and www.majidalsuleimany.blogspot.com –
It provided me a lot of interesting reading after getting tired of reading the usual blogs of people attacking each other subjectively and personally to make their case or points across – or to defend themselves.
I have come to the sad realization that the main reason why they do not support your books because you SPEAK THE TRUTH … and the facts as they are really are on the ground.
Like in your book themes, it is true there is a lot that needs to improve on The Arab Management Side (and fast too!) and the FEW misbehaving crude Expatriates amongst us here have to change and transform FAST TOO – before they cause irreparable harm and damage to a very beautiful tolerant peaceful and compassionate country like Oman – the few left in the world – and the beacon to others – and an example to follow and emulate!
The few bad apples should not spoil the whole basket of us especially Residents and Expatriates here in Oman – and we see Oman as our Second Home – even if we strive to go to Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc.
I have read your books and articles – to me always you will be that Big Man and With A Big Heart! );
We will pray for you for the Booker Award!!
Your Friend Always,

2 The Introduction Part
After the introduction as below, I was asked to explain more on myself and on my books – and how I started writing.
Majid Al Suleimany, an Omani National, is a Human Resource and Management Expert and as a Professional, Advisor and Consultant with over 35 years of experience and exposure. He is also a Writer and has authored 5 books, 2 of which are in Management, with titled Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and A Cry For Help, and the other 3 books are a collection of his article writings, titled The Sequel, Short Takes and Between Us Only. He is married with 4 children, and his hobbies include Writing, Reading, Internet, Documentaries, Films, Meeting and Interfacing with People, and more.
3 HowoH I started Writing
In short I stumbled into writing after going into Management Consultancy business after voluntary early retirement from PDO after 25 years of service. The business had collapsed – and beyond my controls and expectations – and after failing to get gainful employment in Oman went to work in Abu Dhabi in UAE.
I returned to Oman after my job was Emiratised – and again went looking for a job in Oman. In short that seems my story – I start to write more because I have no job prospects and opportunities.
I was writing since I was 14 years old – and my first essay My Most Vivid Dream won a National Prize in the 1960s in Tanzania, and was awarded by The Aga Khan himself on his visit to Tanzania. At the time I was in Aga Khan Secondary School in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
I wrote wherever I was – School Magazines, Company Magazines etc – and I was writing as a hobby more in Times of Oman in the column titled Give Me A Break (contributions from Readers).
The offer came to me from The Oman Daily Observer if I were interested to be a Columnist because at the time they were looking for Omani Writers with good levels in English Writings.
My column was born – and my first article was titled – More Dangerous and Troubled Waters Ahead – dated April 23 2003 – and after the Iraq invasion. I never stopped since – and writing every day.
The Interviewer – TAB – Tariq Al Barwani – reminded the listeners to see me every Sunday in The Oman Daily Observer under the column of Between Us Only!
(I did not talk of Muscat Daily Column At The Work Place because the column was no longer running here).
4 Explaining on My Books
Briefly you can get all the information here at www.majidbooks.com and www.alsuleimany.com
I explained how the ideas started to formulate after getting more hits and emails whenever I wrote on Office Related and Management articles compared to the other articles (Social, Economic, Socio-Economic, Life issues, Culture, Customs, Traditions, Behavioural, Teenagers issues, Marital Issues, Driving, etc – and rare cases of International Politics).
I then realised there was more potential and prospects here – and after my three books – Original – Between Us Only – The Sequel and Short Takes – mainly from my columns – but there were others too added in (original versions all and those ‘that did not make it’ for various reasons)!
Thus Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and A Cry For Help! were born.
See my websites for more information.
5 Management (and Related) Issues.
This is what I said (in Brief)
As Arabs and Muslims, work is considered as a very important aspect of our lives. A person who works hard is considered as if in worship in prayers. Then how come we are still behind the rest of the world?
Second thing – you should pay the worker before his sweat has dried! (meaning metaphorically on time as he does his work).
Was tempted to say more here, but remembered just in time that we were live on the air!
These are facts – and undeniable!
I had conducted myself a climate survey (Staff Morale Satisfaction) with the approval of my Business Unit Management Team (PDO).
In addition this is what I had found – Staff (including especially Omanis!) found themselves more committed, dedicated, appreciated and motivated during the times when they had expatriate bosses (mainly Europeans) then when they had our own Omani (Arab) bosses.
So what went wrong?
Challenged when was the survey (1995) and if still appropriate now? – I concurred that it was unfair, unethical, unprincipled (and everything else bad!) to generalise – because there are bad and good eggs in each basket – but the point still remains valid – and thus my two books published in 2009 and 2010.
(There were, indeed, some very bad bosses expatriates and in senior expatriate management as in A Cry For Help! – see www.majidbooks.com).
I was asked to explain myself more (keep remembering we were ALIVE on Air! – and TAB has a large following!
6 Learning To Saying No – Being Assertive and Affirmative.
I have written a lot on this subject.
Rather than taking your time I recommend to you to buy the two Management books – to explain myself and in defending my point. It was not easy I can tell you – because TAB did put me on the defensive on my points raised here (good of him though!).
Only I ended by replying if there was a solution I could recommend like his suggestions – of courses – and I said there were many Management Courses by all the Institutes even in Oman – and like Assertiveness, Team Building etc.
He, though, agreed with me that it was a fair point that going to courses was not the solution ‘if the horse still refused to drink the water’ and if there was no willingness to learn, change and transform oneself! If not – simply no point!
Beside the point of generalisations, to be fair to the Arab Manager it all stems from his culture and tradition ‘to be nice’ and ‘to be accepted’ – to be polite and not rude, crude and abrupt – and this will take some time – though he is not alone in this and there are some expatriates including Indians, British etc that behave like the Arab Manager (and the local opposite few cases).
It is noted that the Dutch and Germans are more straightforward (from my own bosses experiences)…..
6 Advices to The Younger Omani Generation (Graduates).
Gave some live real examples and as also in both my management books.
For space will not add here – except that as per His Majesty speeches on the call of the youth to accept more challenges and training to prove himself as capable and for his own and family future and prospects.
I think I gave very good advices to The Youth here.
TAB was very complimentary. In short to accept tasks and do them well – and to prove oneself – and if had an issue is to face it head on and not take the easy way of ‘switching off’ ….talk to your boss face to face pragmatically, openly, constructively and amicably to come to solutions that will work for both of you – and the benefit of the company and country too!
I threw in here the famous Kennedy expression – Do not ask what your country can do for you; but what you can do for your country!
We need to think more on the lines of our country than just our individual selves!
From The Board, The Omani Manager/Director and to The Omani Trainee (fresh graduate)
7 Misbehaving Expatriates ( F E W)!
I again stressed on Generalisations per se – but repeated myself in even spelling F E W (few) and a very tiny proportion (less than 2%) where the job and privileges have gone into their heads – and rise of my book A Cry For Help!
Again see www.majidbooks.com – though few they cause maximum damages by their negative outlooks, focuses, stereotyping against locals – and especially University Graduates and aspiring Managerial (and Senior) positions.
We need to address this situation before it worsens and goes out of hands (A Cry for Help! Book).
8 Anything Good in Arab Management?
Many things including the element of them being ‘more kinder and compassionate cum caring and feeling’ when it comes to discipline and especially losing jobs and terminations.
Challenged if this was a good thing – I ended by saying let us put it smugly – it is a ‘double edged’ sword – but the elements are all there (again generally speaking here).
9 More on The Books Again (Future)
See www.majidbooks.com and www.alsuleimany.com
I explained that the books were available at Family Bookshops, Borders, Turtles (WH Smith – New Stores) in Oman – and UAE at Magrudy’s and Jashanamal.
I explained on my need to launch my books rest of GCC and especially The Arab World – but lack the finances and support.
I explained on my sixth book writing now – A Novel – Sinking Deeper.
I want to be remembered as one who had contributed to society and in Management – not only in Oman – but the rest of the world – as my next project (Inshallah – God Willing – Amin Amen) of a very good Management Reference Book taking it from the two books as the start – and concentrate more generally and for references.
It was a good opportunity for me and thank Tariq Al Barwani and Rym Al Aoudia for this – and my son Fahad Al Suleimany for organising it. Incidentally
Fahad is also coincidentally arranging for A Road Safety Campaign under NAWRAS Sponsorship and with ROP and The Ministries concerned.

Why Change Is Not Easy!
Why Change is Not Easy!
But it is simple. Things will always change. We don’t have a choice about that, but we do have a choice on how we react to change; and as a leader whether or not we choose to create change. The choice really boils down to this…either we manage change, or it will manage us.
The Introduction from Change is Good…You Go First – by Mac Anderson and Tom Feltenstein
(There is also a lot of talk of ‘Live Examples’ of resistance to change in my books – especially The Management Ones – see www.alsuleimany.com – especially on the new book A Cry For Help!)….. Change … Before Changes Change You!
“There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction.” – -Winston Churchill
As a leader, however, deciding to make changes is the easy part. Getting your people on board is much more difficult. Why is that? Quite simply, change is an emotional process. We are all creatures of habit who usually resist it, and welcome routine. Uncharted waters are scary!
In the long run, however, sameness is the fast tract to mediocrity. And, mediocre companies won’t survive. Tuli Kupferburg said it best…”When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge.” And, that is your challenge…to convince your team that the new world you are trying to create is better than the one you’re in. Is it easy? Of course not. It takes planning, commitment, patience and courage.
The truth, of course, is that change can be a wonderful gift. In fact, it is the key that unlocks the doors to growth and excitement in any organization. And, most importantly, without it…your competition will pass you by. A big part of success, as a leader, will be your ability to inspire your team to get out of their comfort zones; to assure them that even though they are on a new path, it’s the right path, for the right reasons.
That’s what this book is all about….ideas, to inspire, to motivate, and to encourage your team to move forward and to embrace change.
We’d like to share one of the chapters. Enjoy!
Learn From Old Warwick
Fostering a spirit of teamwork is critical in times of change. The key element is trust. Trust for the leader and trust for each other.
There is a wonderful story from the play, Some Folks Feel the Rain; Others Just Get Wet; and I think it’s worth sharing again to shed some light on how people think about teamwork…
A man was lost while driving through the country. As he tried to reach for the map, he accidentally drove off the road into a ditch. Though he wasn’t injured, his car was stuck deep in the mud. So the man walked to a nearby farm to ask for help.
“Warwick can get you out of that ditch,” said the farmer, pointing to an old mule standing in a field. The man looked at the decrepit old mule and looked at the farmer who just stood there repeating.
“Yep, old Warwick can do the job.” The man figured he had nothing to lose. The two men and the mule made their way back to the ditch. The farmer hitched the mule to the car. With a snap of the reins, he shouted,
“Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!”
And the mule pulled that car right out of the ditch.
The man was amazed. He thanked the farmer, patted the mule, and asked, “Why did you call out all of those names before you called Warwick?”
The farmer grinned and said, “Old Warwick is just about blind. As long as he believes he’s part of a team, he doesn’t mind pulling.”
Just Not In!
BROKEN GLASS – AND RELATIONSHIPS!

Just ‘Not In’!
After my New Management Book A Cry For Help!, I thought of making this short list of Things Just ‘Not In’ – especially with the focus and theme of The Offices Environment in mind. Forgive me, but this is my own list – from things really seen ‘live’ and from personal experiences and exposures. They are:-
- A rude abusive vicious and arrogant boss that also uses most of the time really ‘sharp, nasty and foul language’ – and very sarcastic, demeaning, abrupt, patronizing, demeaning, belittling and negative stereotyping and assessment in his approach, focus and dealings.
- A boss that screams and shouts to almost everybody – worse to customers and clients – every time something has gone wrong or awry – maybe real or imagined - but that is immaterial and unimportant.
- Dealing with customers and clients based on his own listing, analysis, standing, calculation and estimation of how important, influential, significant, ‘can cause effect back’ to the establishment – in other words, only those big and famous ones get the patience, tolerance and ‘better good dealings!
- Blame culture – find an excuse – the scapegoat – and attacking for no valid or genuine reason – just because you are, the boss and you think you can do so with immunity or disregard and lack of feelings and care.
- Misinformation campaigns – and tell complete lies and fibs – and misrepresentation of the ‘true and real facts’ to the Top Management and expect others to go along with you to support you in hiding the truth - and in telling such lies, misrepresentation and fibs.
- People that try to push the dirt under the carpet, and expect others to go along to support them in these.
- Mixing up of being a Team Member and being part of a Team to a Staff that has objectively and constructively given his brave views, suggestions and ideas – and try to break him down using this tool – You are simply NOT a Team Player!
- Creating and acting dramas and roles, which are not fit for your position and role – and in being the required professional, ethical, transparent and accountable person?
- Taking the hard and good works one has put in himself, and to change a few bits here and there – and then change it and make it as if it were you who did all the works. – And taking credit and benefit not deserved to you (you might even have been against it!).
- Killing off proposals, ideas and suggestions based on who is making it!
- Using your personal relationships with certain preferred people determine and rule you how you deal with the rest – within the establishment – but worse off in dealings with customers and clients – you do not use your head and objectivity but something else!
- Do not call certain individuals to meetings because you do not like them – or what they say in the meetings!
- Move over a Project (like above) near successful completion to someone you like – so the pet person’ can get all the credit – not the person who started or nearly finishing it successfully!
- Adversely move the Project to someone you do not esteem and like – so he can get the blame for its failure – not the person who botched and screwed it up!
- Not protecting and defending staff that did no wrong – and adversely do the opposite for those that did – especially to outsiders and in customers and clients relationships and dealings.
- Encouraging and asking Staff to spy on each other – and a good ear and recipient of all the rumours, scandals and mischief in the offices – divide and rule theme – or as in the army – shooting at your own troops syndromes!
- Loud Actors and Talkers – and in high profile drama person, when delivery and input is almost negligible – but they are good actors that have fooled peoples including the Top Brasses for too long – and still continue to do so! (That is – fooling people all the time!)
- Then it hits you in the face as to how these peoples have not only survived for too long in their positions – but even to be promoted and to be considered as high-fliers and high potential essential and indispensable Staff.
- Peoples that try to act as your friend and confidante and behind your back stab you!.
- Those that act as spies or spokesmen for the bosses, just to curry favour and cause problems to others – even their own friends and those that stupidly, naively or innocently had trusted them.
- Create misunderstandings, divisions, rumours in the offices – especially against you do not like or see as a threat!
- Those misrepresenting what you said to them in confidence – betray and completely different portrayal and picture, and land others in great troubles and problems – and may even jeopardize and cause them not only to progress but even lose their jobs too.
The question one may well ask – why all these plays, dramas and episodes – like in the Television series when all we want is to work together feelingly, caringly and amicably – so we can all feed our stomachs and our families too?
Treat your Staff better and more kinder, sympathetically, understandingly, and compassionately. They hurt and bleed too. They also bleed – and get pained. You are owed to do all these under professionalism, ethics, job and social obligations, accountabilities, transparencies – and your social, psychological and moral duty to do too.
Be guided accordingly – and Take Care!

Are You Being Served?
Features – At The Workplace – Column – Muscat Daily of Monday March 1st 2010.
AT THE WORK PLACE!
Are You Being Served?
I have never seen before a grown up man cry so profusely, so loudly, so heartbrokenly!!
Now – With all my age and all my experiences and exposures, I must admit this – I have never seen before a grown up man cry so profusely, heartbrokenly – and his whole body was shaking in fits of agony and distress – and all I could do is watch helplessly and impotently – and I then approached him as he was starting his car.
I then knocked on his car window. Though he had wiped his face, his face was aghast, wet and tearful. So I asked him what was the matter? (As if I did not know!). He told me – the good and kind man he always was and I knew as a work colleague for a long time – nothing – just some family problems. I volunteered to drive him home in his car or mine (his choosing) because I told him he was not in a state to drive alone by himself! He politely declined – and half clutched in reverse nearly hitting the car that was coming into the reserved bank parking lot!
Half an Hour Ago – I had come to ask for some facility request – just like the man did. But the man was shouting and screaming that he had been a good customer and maintaining his account properly all these years – until some business bad luck and misfortune had struck him! All he wanted now was a small amount. He had taken bigger amounts and had repaid. His villa was still mortgaged to the bank. He was shouting – even in the worst off case scenario my villa alone can that easily repay my loan with you. Why are you being so hard, difficult and unreasonable with me now? The man was forcefully retired – and his Pension was not enough even to pay the monthly instalments of his loan.
It was the rude reply that the man got that set him off!
I remember long time ago – I too had threatened my Bank Manager. I will close my account and move it to another bank. She had then replied to me – Do Not Threaten Us, Mr. M. Your salary just comes in and goes away in 2 or 3 days. And then you come for a facility request! The loser is you – not the Bank!
It was the way she said it, her body mannerisms and the open door that too set me off!
Are You Being Served Here? – It is true that especially those working in Commercial Lending Institutions are most taxed and tried with the economic down turn – and dealing with especially people that have lost jobs – are going to lose jobs – companies in financial dire stress and troubles – and Pensioners with reduced incomes and still loans to pay. Difficult customers that want immediate attention – and unreasonable demand and requests – at short notice too!
It is understandable that it is very difficult to continue to maintain calm, composure, sanity, faculty, coolness – but please Do Not Forget – Professionalism and Ethics! Do not engage in verbal assaults and shouting matches – however disgruntled, misbehaving and shouting and screaming customers can be – like in a mad house! Keep your cool, calm and composure – and resist the temptation to engage.
Even if customers are annoying, misbehaving and arrogant! You owe it to your Position to remain cool and collected – and Professional and Ethical however against the odds and difficult it can be!
You do not realise the results and implications of your actions. If you have still not got it, please reread again….. Take Care!

You Are Fired!
Monday February 15, 2010 – Features Column – Muscat Daily.
AT THE WORK PLACE!
You Are Fired!
There is nothing that is really hard, tough and that eats the very hearts of many Managers and Human Resources Professionals than when it comes to terminating employees!
One of the most scaring and worrying phrase that we working peoples will ever face in our lives is when you hear ‘You Are fired’ being said unto us by our boss or by those in Authority. We have seen these films where the retort or rebuke comes from the subordinate when he or she says – I am not fired, I just quit! You may call it a face saving exercise or whatever you wish to call it, but when the guy is dead serious, he does not mint his words – he really means what he says! After all, you may well ask too, what does he lose? Especially if he has really been fired?
Then there is this cartoon where this boss character tells his subordinate – you should read your E-mail more often. What are you still doing here? I fired you two weeks ago!
How can you tell if you are in the ‘firing range’ or ‘hit list of being fired’? Not to unnecessary scare or worry you with all the difficulties and problems we already have? But it is better to be prepared! The East Africans have this expression – if you see your neighbour’s head being shaved, be sure to put water on your head just in case – or your head maybe shaved dry like the one you see it being done to! Better be ready and to be prepared! Remember also in our culture and customs, unpleasant and unwelcome news are best avoided at all costs, but the NO will be communicated in different subtle signs and formats! Here are some ‘tell tales’ signs – My Own List:-
v The IT Help Desk frequently comes in and asks to see your PC for no reason, you did not complain of anything wrong with your PC!
v The Boss comes continuously and asks progress and status of assigned projects and tasks.
v Worst case scenario when he says sorry – but he is assigning it to someone else but not you, and you have to hand over it to him.
v When meetings you are supposed to attend go on without your presence!
v Everybody is extra nice and polite, even the guys who hardly spoke to you in the past.
v They change your designated pool car to a lower or cheaper model, with the flimsiest of excuses given!
v When peoples you see talking suddenly go silent when you approach, or go extra nice! (The news has leaked out).
v When the Boss invites you all to dinner (or lunch) to his house, and makes a point to see that you do turn up as a VIP. Your throat is ready for hanging, you will feel guilty to make a scene because he was particular nice to you!
v People pass your Office quickly without saying Hello, or go other routes to avoid you.
v The Secretary or Assistant who hardly talked to you in the past makes a point to talk to you, or ask you – how are you doing? Troubled waters ahead, more when she asks about your family for the first time since you had met her!
v The Security guards being more vigilant to insist to see your ID card.
v If it is a finger print entry system (or other) whenever you try it, it does not work, you have to wait for someone else to come along to let you in.
v You ask for two pens black, 2 blue – but they give you only one pen black or blue! They tell you, stationery is out, and we shall bring in when they come in!
v Even the Tea boy keeps asking if you would like more tea, coffee etc – when you just had a cup 15 minutes back, or run continuous errands for you!
v The CEO or the Senior Management pretend not to have seen you, though you have tried to draw their attention and or say Hi!
v From above, they are unnecessarily and unprovoked insult and antagonize you in the corridors and in front of Juniors and subordinates (and even customers and clients too), so you take your pride and esteem in and make it easy for them by resigning yourself!
v Or they make a play-act where you become the victim, and seen as the unreliable and untrustworthy credible one as a result.
v Those are the most despicable, unethical and unprofessional ugly turn of events and sequences!
v Forgetting all that you have achieved, but judge you by quite a different (new) set of rules and measures, just to pin you down!
v And many others more!
So Dear Readers, keep your head low for all the flying missiles going round the offices. Better still, do not get emotionally involved – learn to get yourself distanced and disinterested. If you want to keep your job, that is …..!
Jobs are not easy to get now, once you reach that certain age! I had a good Indian friend once – more Senior Manager to me – and I asked him politely, tactfully and diplomatically – Mr. S – how can you tell tell-tale signals if you are being fired? He retorted to me – why are they going to fire you? Two weeks later – he was fired – the poor man – I knew as The Human Resources Manager – but just could not tell him directly – the Omani culture of cannot say No had just kicked in!
